Mechanical Brake Pressure Regulator diagnostics

Hello Scotty community,

I have a mechanical spring loaded brake pressure regulator on my old timer. The spring is squeaking a lot and I'm wondering if I should just grease it or change the regulator depending on whether it's working or not.

Can these mechanical ones go bad? How to diagnose it and test if it works or not(disconnect the rod that is coming from the rear suspension that meets the spring and compare the brake force with it connected?) I am almost sure that it is the original and hasn't been touched for 35+ years.

Cheers!

If you can find one just for safety alone I would replace it with a new unit

My old Toyota 4x4 has a brake proportioning valve at the rear axle.  The shop manual shows a fairly complicated method for connecting a pressure gauge and varying the load in the bed to adjust it to get the correct proportion of front and rear braking.  I would try to get the shop manual for your vehicle and see what they say about problem symptoms and proper adjustment procedures for the valve.
