a friend has an old Mercedes convertible v 8 carburetor low milage.
for about $10 000 . reliability and operation cost are an issue for me...like you.. what's your opinion 🤔

They're nice cars no doubt, classic. When's the last time it was running and driving on the roads?? Could be an expensive endeavor. Most good examples for sale I've seen starting in the upper teens. I was told long time ago, don't buy or sell cars to/from friends; you may not be friends afterwards.
