2003 Dodge Ram 1500
5.9l engine.
Trans rebuilt. However needs 3-4 accumulator work in the valve body. Most likely the valve body needs bore out work to complete trans rebuild.
Originally the seller thought a bad torque converter.
Bought assembled cleaned and oiled a valve body with a couple new valves springs and anchor mount wedge was replaced.
Upon trans work at a shop the vehicle still ran but didn't seem like it was shifting as well. I assumed old Dodge old Dodge problems. They replaced steering column and shifter.
Im about $2500 into cost of vehicle and repairs.
The engine is believed to have thrown a rod smoked up and overheated on a 55mph highway within 30 min start up to completely overheating.
Knowing now that the trans is near complete with codes for what I assumed intially. The engine now blown as I have no idea how much damage occured as there's an extra hole in the oil pain.
I work at a shop. But knowledge is not slim but never full replacement of engine.
New 5.9 l engines 0 mile million mile up to 5 year warranty. Some body dents. Asking around $2500
What manufacturer does the best on engine replace/refurb up to date mods in hopes that it's worth it to spend the $2500 on an engine.
$2500 in as is. Engine blown and trans 90 to 95 percent rebuilt. Is it junk or fixable for sale to get my money back? Or fixable to run. What would you do with a $2500 paper weight fix it or ditch.
My opinion is you should cut your losses and put your money into something that will last for a few years. That truck will likely be a never ending problem with it's age and history. Aside from the mechanical issues I would guess there is body and frame rust as well.
Ditch the Dodge.
