Idle drops too far when engine warms up

Oldsmobile Alero 4 cylinder first model year 2000 2.4 liter.....idle speeds at start 1300...few seconds later it drops to specs... 750-850....but as oil gets working temperature....it drops to 580-610.....  what can that be.....can I check something with ice-spray...? Greetings from Netherlands...Thanks. I look all your movies......ALWAYS !

See the shop manual idle speed section. You should also be scanning for codes and live data.

Shouldn't it be normal when the RPM's drop when the car warms up? If the RPM'S were going high then there would be a problem. Higher RPM'S means a rough idle. 


Yes, but from the OP's description the idle is dropping well below specification for that engine. I usually see 500-600 RPM specified for cars from the 1960s and 1970s. More modern vehicles frequently idle in the 800-1000 rpm range.


You have it backwards, I think. spinning at higher RPMs tends to smooth out the engine, barring anything like broken motor mounts. Too slow RPMs causes the engine to basically lug and stall. Not enough fuel is getting into the engine in order to run smoothly. There could be not enough fuel due to vacuum leaks... All kinds of things. I've greatly simplified this, but the general idea is there. I learned that messing around with idle screws on my Pontiac's carburetor.


Ok. If it runs fine then drive it as it is.
