2012 Chevy Silverado 1500 5.3L V8, 113,000 miles, Living in Southwest Montana
Recently traveled 2,200 miles to Southern California in mid-March, and halfway through the trip the check engine light comes on.
After returning from trip truck sits for a few days and then has trouble starting. Stutters for 1-2 seconds and then starts.
Alternator and starter seem to be fine as there are no weird sounds and nothing looking bad or loose. Battery seems to go down to about 50% after being fully charged and then driven even one block.
The cold weather caused battery to die one day back in February, but other than that the battery is relatively new.
Code reader displays P0172 and P0175 Running too rich bank 1 & 2, so maybe it’s the air filter or fuel pump?
Haven’t checked air filter yet, but would like to know before I pull out my tools. Should I clean the fuel injectors too maybe?
Thanks
Either the alternator, which seems to be fine is not, or the battery or both. Voltage at the battery with engine idling should be about 14.5 v and 12.75 with the engine off. If this checks out, test for parasitic battery drain (see Scotty's video). A relatively (whatever that means) new battery is useless if it's not being charged. Air filters are easy to change. A weak fuel pump would make it run lean, not rich. If you have a MAP and MAF sensor, clean them too.
