Do you guys think my dad should get a 2016 tundra 1794 edition 65k miles for $35,000 or should he get a 2008 toyota tundra limited with 170,000 miles for $14,000? Btw, we test drove a 2021 tundra sr5 today and it was amazingly big and quiet.

does the tundra develop problems after 200,000 miles?

The newest you can afford.

Depends on your budget. The first one is double the price of the first one. If you have an extra 35 grand then sure get that one I would shoot for 30 grand (keep in mind the msrp is $60k) but if its a truck you will use once in a while do you really need to pay that much? Tundras can last a long time so they are a good choice.

If your original budget was 30 thousand dollars then sure check it out have a mechanic look at it definitely for the price range but if it was less than continue looking for one lowest miles possible in your budget.

Good luck!

Does the one with 170k miles still have life left in it without major repairs? My dad will use it everyday for a whole year to fix up a house we just purchased and will then use it for other projects as well.

@kerem 60 grand for a tundra. There´s a sucker born every day. ❗
If I had 60G to drop on a truck, I´d get an F-250 Lariat FX-4 superca(Sub $50,000) with the Godzilla 7.3 V8. Come now. I can´t believe people would drop that much on any half ton truck, especially for a Toyota which won´t ever tow over 8K.
For heavenś sakes.

It really depends on so many factors I can't give a definite answer. Tundras could go 300 400k miles in ideal conditions. For the price range, I'd DEFINITELY have a mechanic check it out, he can tell you how much life is left. If you want, you could meet in between and find one with lets say 120 130k miles. If its been taken care of there should be a good amount of life left.

To give an example of Toyota reliability, my father's old daily was a 97 Corolla. That generation of Corolla is known as one of the best ever made many over 400 500k miles, but ours fell apart at 170k miles because the previous owners didn't take care of it and in fact wrecked it.

And I also agree $60k is a lot for a truck, so if you get the first one for $30k, then thats a decent deal!

For the second one, $10-11k max for me but thats what Tundras generally go for. I saw one a couple years back (there isn't many here) with 200k+ miles listed for 8 grand (07 model) so I'd pay less.

If you are considering trucks of such expense, simple negotiation would basically get you extra money for YOUR first car. A couple thousand more on the RAV4 could move you from 06 Base model level to 11-12 Limited V6 level.
