Nissan Altima Transmission Shutter

Hey Scotty! My girlfriend bought a 2010 Nissan Altima 2.5 SL with 172,000 miles with the dreaded Nissan Automatic Transmission. The car shutters whenever you take it out of park and get into first gear. I believe the gears within the transmission are worn and slipping severely. Are there any methods to preserve her transmission or fix the problem until she gets enough money to afford a new car?

Try some Lucas transmission fix, or similar additive, and cross your fingers.

ok I didn't realise this was a CVT with all the talk of gears. Additive probably won't help here and the transmission is just worn out.

The Jatco CVT on those cars is a known weak spot. It has no gears as such, just a belt and variable pulleys, and those do deteriorate and slip as the car ages. Unfortunately not much can be done about it. You're looking at imminent transmission failure which those cars are known for. They rarely last more than 100K miles so that car is well beyond the expected lifetime of the transmission. Replacement cost is thousands of dollars. (A quick internet search suggests around $4000.) If you do try a chemical fix as @MountainManJoe suggests, make sure it is compatible with CVT transmissions. Really though about all you can do is baby that thing as much as possible and be prepared for the trans to crater on it soon.

Well, that's typical on those Altimas with a Jatco CVT and that's an 11-year-old Altima. As they age the transmissions are pretty weak. Is it the original transmission, because 175k miles is pretty good considering it's an older gen Jatco CVT?

It does sound like the cvt but at 172k I’d say it lasted very well and is nothing to be ashamed of
