Scotty,

I love your channel, your a car genius!

Question: I am driving my Girlfriends 2012 Volvo S60 T5 81,000 miles.

I checked the oil and it was low so I filled it up will the right full synthedic oil OEM specs.

I started to smell burning oil and I opened the hood and the oil cap was off and oil was everywhere.....I remember putting it back on....I am low only a half of quart so....

Did I overfill the oil?? I remember putting it back on after I filled it up..?

Anyways, the car seemed to  run fine but did I do any real damage and if so what should I do now?

You Rock, Cheers!

If it's still between the hi and low marks on the dipstick you should be fine; keep an eye on it. Just have a oily mess to clean up. Could be the cap wasn't fully snug and worked it's way out.

Gently clean oil off the hoses, etc. If the cap isn't tight, or has a propensity to loosen, buy a new OEM cap. And just drive it, keeping an eye (or a nose) on the cap. From your description, it doesn't seem anything truly fatal to the engine occurred, if only half a quart spewed out. (Many less attentive drivers lose more than that from oil consumption, over a few thousand miles, and never check their oil).

Otherwise, you should be good.

Good luck!

Cool! Thank you for the information! I will clean and keep an eye on it.

Cheers!
