Oil change based on time

Topic starter

I purchased a 2023 Subaru Forester in July 2023. I now have 995 miles on the vehicle as of November 2023. The dealership advised me to have the oil changed every 6 months if I still hadn't reached the recommended mileage. I  asked the service advisor about this since I would have less than 2000 miles on my car. He told me oil still breaks down over time, and I could void the warranty. I live in Texas, so I understand excessive heat, especially in stop and go driving, can be detrimental. Am I being scammed?

Am I being scammed?

Most likely. The general rule of thumb for oil changes is every 5000 miles or one year, whichever comes first.

The oil change interval required to keep your warranty in effect would be in the service schedule that came with the car.

What does the owner’s manual say?  I would change the engine oil no more than every 5,000 miles or once a year, whichever comes first.  Also, don’t forget to change the oil filter with each oil change.

The first time the engine was started, anything that could harm the engine is now in the oil filter. You don't need to change the oil except once a year, or 5,000 miles, whichever comes first. CAD and engineers designed the engine, and modern computers are extremely precise. You might actually do your first oil change yourself, take some pictures of the opened oil filter and show us. I've never thought of cracking open the first oil change filter, and I bought my 2017 Mustang brand-new. I can just about guarantee you won't find anything without using a microscope, engine manufacturing is that advanced.
