Oil Changes for New Truck

Hi Scotty,

I was trained to work on cars many years ago. I’m old school and things have changed. Haha.

I just purchased a brand new 2020 Ram 1500 Classic Tradesman 2WD Standard Cab 8ft long bed. Auto transmission. 3.55 rear end with the Pentastar V6. It has 92 miles on it, 71 of them are mine.

I live in North Carolina.

Oil and oil changes have changed since the “old days”.

Should I do the first oil change at 1,000 miles, then another at 3,000 miles, and then every 4,000 miles after that? (Old school)

Or do you recommend a different schedule?

Any recommendations on grade/weight that works best for this vehicle/engine combo?

(My truck is used for very light duty, no towing)

Should I use conventional oil, semi synthetic, or synthetic?

I’m 41 years old  I want this to be the only pickup truck I own the rest of my life (hopefully I live until 80 at least)

thanks in advance!

Kerry

Hi Kerry. Welcome to the forum.

All these maintenance items -- fluid types, change intervals etc. -- should be specified in your owner's manual. That is the best program.

I think asking for 40 years from your Dodge isn't realistic, but I hope it lasts a very long time.

@mountainmanjoe. Thanks!

There used to be a lot of problems in new cars with the cylinders being scored by small metal fragments if the oil wasn’t changed more frequently at the beginning of the engines life.

I’m curious....why wouldn't it be realistic to get 40 years out of a brand new vehicle?

the investment of time and capital will become impractical, or impossible

Just some unimportant BS.  I read a few years ago that anyone living when I read the article would "probably" be living to be 100 years old.  At the time I laughed at the rediculousness of me living to be that old.  The truth is that I am now being looked at by my doctor like some mechanics look at "antique" cars.  I am not so much headed to the junkyard as I am a project to keep dumping money into until rust eats me alive.

Eighty is the new 55 so buy the best damned truck you can find.  You will enjoy it longer than you think.
