oil vacuuming opinions

Hello Scotty,

I had my oil changed and discovered they no longer remove the oil pan plug for a gravity fed flow of old oil.  Instead they procedure is to insert a tube in the oil dipstick tube and suck out the oil. I remember having a chevy big block on my boat and this procedure was used...made perfect sense then but not now on my cars. What is your thought here?

Keep up the good work.

I think this has already been discussed before in the forum.

They suck it out so that incompetent bumbling mechanics can't cause more costly damage your vehicle (strip the plug, forget to put it back in, etc.)

I think you should still drain the sediments out.

Given your description I'm assuming most likely you had your oil changed at either a chain oil change place, dealership, or some lazy mechanic. Otherwise even when I don't feel like changing my oil myself and have my mechanic do it for me he opens the plug on the bottom and lets the oil fully drain. With draining you get all the old oil and whatever else sitting at the bottom of the oil pan drained which is what should be done. These chain shops etc. just want to get as many done in as short as time as possible and for the most profit.
