Open bleeder when replacing brake pads?

Hello,

I am replacing the back brakes on my 2012 Rav4 soon. I have done research and found there is some controversy on whether you need to open the bleeder while pushing back in the caliper piston. Do I meed to do this??? If I do not, will there be damage to ABS unit or the master cylinder? I have not seen Scotty do it in a video, but I have seen others say you should do it. Please advise.

I never do and have never had an issue. I don't think it's worth the risk of introducing air to the brake system.

Just compress the piston slowly.
