Hello, I recently purchased a 2008 chevy malibu with 155k miles and the 3.6L 24 valve VVT engine. I was told the codes were because he just replaced the sensors and they needed to relearn timing. I took it to get looked at by a mechanic however and they told me the engine needs to come apart and have the timing chain replaced. I was curious if this was true as the AutoZone reader suggested the VVT solenoid but its AutoZone so who knows.

Well, if the mechanic is right that often does happen. It will trip those codes when the timing chain is either stretched or worn or has jumped the tooth that's very common

Okay thank you I took it to another mechanic with much lower labor costs but they said to try the VVT solenoid before they will do the timing chain. He says its much cheaper if it does end up solving the problem as the car currently runs fine.
