Hello, im working on a 97 ford thunderbird 4.6L V8 with around 230,000 miles on it. Today i got the P401 Code concerning my EGR valve. I checked the vacuum lines and its ok, So im going to try and clean it out. Is that a smart move? Or should i just go buy another EGR valve?

I would try cleaning it first. A new one costs 50 bucks.

If it's an old fashioned metal one, we used to just take them out and tap them with a hammer to get most of the carbon out.  Of course, that won't help much if the diaphragm is shot.  If you have to get a new one, make sure to get a new gasket too.

Wow i hope its that easy. And yeah even if i only take it off and clean it i will most likely buy a new gasket in case the old 1 is bad after removal

I would definitely replace the gasket, just for quality.

You mean P0401?

some tools will drop the leading zero. It's redundant.
