[Solved] Paint pealing and oxidised paint

Hello, this is my 1995 Celica. I have a paint problem. The colour needs polishing, but there are multiple spots where the paint coat is pealing off. This is because the previous owner didn’t prime it correctly (it’s not rust). But I don’t know what to do since the paint is pealing off on some spots (like 1 square cm spots) I don’t know if i can even polish over that. I currently don’t have money for a full repaint and i am looking for some tips.

PS. One of the biggest problems is the only big piece that pealed of on the driver side which is really noticeable.

I would like to at least blend the colour together, but I don’t know what to do first. Sand it, polish it, bondo it or even just paint it.

Do you maybe have any tips?
Thank you in advance 🤝

Best regards

Can you take a photo, upload to a file-sharing site, and post the link here. It sounds like it may be clear-coat failure but it would be helpful to actually see the problem.

I'm afraid those photos are very low-resolution and taken from a distance. It's hard to make out the defects in the paint, you need close up photos of the problem area(s) taken at a decently high resolution.

Another option would be to sand it down, and put a cool big sticker, or vinyl wrap, to cover up the spot.

the correct fix is a professional repaint.

However, at that point, the paint will be worth more than the car

I would just drive it into the ground

The whole car needs to be sanded down and re-painted.

I don't know how prevalent junkyards are in Slovenia, nor how popular the Celica is there. I had minor hail damage and peeling clear coat on my 1999 Ford Ranger, and I went to the local junkyard in Ohio, found a matching hood that was in good shape and swapped mine out. It cost $60. You can do that with doors, hoods, trunklids and fenders, but the roof, rear quarter panels and such will need to be repainted if they're messed up. You can't remove those parts from the car body.

From what I've heard alot of people send stuff there for machine work as it's dirt cheap (like $200 to get your block sleeved, line honed, decked & have the heads rebuilt) but not sure on body work.

I'm sure the average wage is commiserate with that low cost though.

It would be nice if their milsurp was as cheap because there's a nice camo pattern I want🤣

Putting myself in your shoes with a limited budget, this is what I would do. (disclaimer: I have done very little auto painting)

Basically for right now, you want to accomplish two things.  Protect the peeling spots from rusting, and make them look a little more presentable.

1. Buy an appropriate amount of product, primer, paint and clear coat.

2. Using light steady pressure, sand down the areas with (I think) 600 grit sandpaper removing all of the peeling paint and primer.

3. Clean the areas with a lint free cloth and some alcohol to remove dust and dirt.

4.  Personally I would skip the Bondo.  Once the areas are prepped, prime, paint and clearcoat them.  Polishing should help to blend in the color a bit.

I think that would be a good temporary/medium term fix until you decide if you want to do a full repaint, or just drive the vehicle as is.

This a repeat of of the same question yesterday.

The paint is badly damaged. (I can't believe both the paint and primer peeled. It looks like impact damage to me) . The bare metal is exposed and you can see it has been rusting for a quite some time.
