Looking to buy a new(or used new) truck... wondering your idea on best one to look for.

Was in severe accident with a brand new specialty order Chevy in '02....air bags never deployed and sent me hospital & rehab for around 3 years....so that kinda ruined my opinion about "Chevy's"!!!

ALWAYS been Ford lover, cause father used to own a 465 5-speed with burt-out glass packs... So fell in love early with the noise and power!!! 🙂

But NOW looking for reliability, fuel economy & longevity!!!

Your opinion on what to get in??

THANKS A MILLION!!!!

Trust you're advice alot!!! 🙂

Welcome to the forum.

For reliability and longevity, the undisputed champ is the V8 (previous gen) Tundra.  I haven’t looked at prices lately, but last I checked, unfortunately they were pretty inflated.  The new ones are a different story.  They have a twin turbo V6, and initial reports have been mixed.  They also have had many minor issues with things like the infotainment system.  Real world fuel economy also is reportedly far below EPA estimates.  Overall, they are probably still OK, but do your homework.

For fuel economy, the best is the GM 3L Duramax.  That’s what I have, and last week I got 32 mpg between Amarillo and Denver.  In typical commuting, I get 25-27, and 18-19 towing.  But I would worry buying one used because I suspect longevity will be compromised if they aren’t maintained religiously. Plus, I agree that GM’s build quality over the years has been spotty. And I don’t know I can endorse GM’s gas trucks.

Ford is really enigmatic to me.  Their engines in recent years have been heavily criticized, but they still have some fans.  Ford also seems to have been the most aggressive in pricing in recent years; might be hard to get a fair deal, new or used.

The interesting option is RAM.  Corporate quality control has been terrible, but their trucks may have improved a bit in recent years.  And their hemi V8 is probably the second best gas engine (after Toyota) in the last 10 years. RAM also makes the most comfortable trucks with the nicest interiors.  But what makes them appealing IMO is the pricing.  They are probably the most discounted half ton trucks.  That can offset the long term ownership cost.

To be complete, I’ll also mention Nissan.  The Titan is a fine truck, but it’s being phased out, and dealer support is next to nonexistent.

For mid size trucks, the only one to consider, really, is the Tacoma.  But used ones are waaaay overpriced, and the new model will likely have some issues to work out.

You want something great. Get a Toyota. Either a tundra or a Tacoma. All the other ones are made pretty crappy. The quality control is gone down the toilet
