How long they will last with only regular maintenance and minor repairs?
Note: Please do not use automatic transmissions to affect rankings im in US but will still consider a manuel transmission
Brands to rank:
Subaru
Mazda
Kia/Hyundai
Volkswagen
General Motors
Nissan (Renault/Nissan/Mitsubishi)
Also, your thoughts on the stake Toyota has on Subaru, which I believe has increased to 20%
Well, out of that group for new cars I'd probably rank from best to worst:
Mazda
Subaru
Kia/Hyundai
Volkswagen
Nissan
GM
(Really, anything ranked below Subaru rapidly gets into junk.)
If talking about used cars things can be quite different. Subarus from 10-20 years ago suffered from head gasket problems on their 4-cylinder engines, Mazdas used to be of somewhat lower quality than today, Nissans were good until Renaultitis got to them, and even GM used to produce some reliable products.
Thanks! I'm talking about used so like 4-6 years ago. By ranking would be
Mazda
Subaru
Kia
Hyundai
Nissan
Gm
as well because I know that since 2013 Mazda has had lot's of improvement and subaru's had issues 15-20 years ago. Also, I own a Kia Sportage from 2009 and is very reliable with lots of mileage but the newer ones have GDi and Turbos so they can barely do 100k miles.
Yeah, almost anything aside from some truly awful GM and Nissan junk can get to 100K miles without too many problems. For most new car buyers that suffices, but for those of us who like to keep a car forever or buy them used (or both), that's not nearly a long enough lifespan.
Im not even old enough to drive yet but I am researching cars so I dont make a mistake and buy a Nissan with 120k miles and spend 10 grand on it. In my 5-10k budget I would buy something WITH 100k miles and want it to last another 100k. For me, my fathers Corolla fell apart at 170k miles and we took care of it but the issue is with Toyota's and Honda's, people buy them and think they are invinsible and wreck it they dont even do basic maintenance and they charge so much. But in comparison, you can find pristine shape Mazda's and Subaru's. For me 200k miles is good. I have a 12 year old Kia with 130k miles we payed 10k for it when it was 1 year old so too me it was a great purchase but Scotty wants a car to last 500.000 miles and hates Kia's.
For a first car if you can pick something up with maybe 120K to 150K miles that's not too expensive and run it up to 200K to 250K miles you'd be doing pretty good and that's not an unreasonable expectation if you choose well. Not many will last 500K miles though!
Exactly! Everyone likes Camry's but as far as I know most Camrys made after 2006 are pretty much junk. 2007-2011 had lot's of issues with oil burning which my friend and scotty's son deals with and their interior is cheap. The 2012-2014 is so underengineered that it is ranked poorely in crash tests. The 2015-2017 was decet but the 2018 had a new transmission which came with issues. I feel like these can't o 3 4 500k miles. There are more than a few reports of 2015+ Camry's having their transmission go out at liek 130.000 miles. My father's 2009 Kia Sportage and 2014 Honda Odyssey are on their original transmission, but the Corolla was junk with issues starting and stalling and such. I feel like with the increasing cost of Toyota's while their quality is getting lower and lower, it's worth to give a chance on other vehicles. For a first car I'm considering the 2012 Volvo s60.
Volvos can be good cars, certainly better than Audi or VW, but be aware that European cars tend to be high-maintenance and in some cases difficult to work on, and parts can be expensive. They tend not to be very forgiving if maintenance is neglected and you wouldn't want a used one that was treated that way. I'm more familiar with Volvo's old rear-drive models which were built like tanks.
Yeah. Scotty made a vidoe on the XC70 and said that they made enough of them to have cheap parts. Honestly, I can find them all over craigslist with 200 250k miles and that is enough for me. I would bring it to a mechanic any ways.
Here's my list (which is just my OPINION and no way fact) from most to least reliable:
1. Mazda
2. Subaru
3. Nissan
4. Volkswagen
5. Kia/Hyundai
6. Literally every other car brand
Last place: GM.
I see. I would put Chrysler below GM though. Fiat's commonly blow their engine's up with 40k highway miles I can find chevrolet's better than that. But other than that I agree with you for the most part. But I would have put Kia over Nissan and VW that's all. Thanks for your opinion!
My personal ranking of those brands:
Mazda
Subaru
Kia/Hyundai
Nissan/Mitsubishi
Volkswagen
General Motors
