Poor Fuel Mileage

Scotty, I have an '07 Honda Pilot 3.5 liter engine, AWD with 240,000 miles.  I live in Wisconsin.  This has been an excellent car and I have taken very good care of the car.  The car runs great, no dashboard warning lights, the engine runs like a sewing machine, etc....  really good car!  However, I calculated my gas mileage the other day and I got 15 miles to the gallon.  I have new high quality tires with excellent tread all inflated to 29 psi, the air filter has been replaced within the last 15,000 miles and new iridium spark plugs within the last 15,000 miles.

What could be the cause of my poor fuel mileage?

Thank you,

Mike Jensen

According to this website your MPG is pretty good on average.

For that model year that is pretty much the typical gas mileage for those things. A friend of mine’s parents had a 2008 Pilot and a 2005 CMC Yukon XL. The Pilot’s gas mileage was only like 2 or 3mpg better than the Yukon but the Yukon was much bigger, more comfortable and more powerful.

This might be due to the cold, cars are usually less efficient in the cold.

how so? Isn't air denser in winter? I know they also put less fillers in the fuel in winter.

The Awd system works harder in snow or limited traction conditions.

AWD, Large SUV, large tires, cold weather all play a role in the MPG. It's not a fuel economy vehicle. By design it's a gas guzzler.

It's not far off.
