Prius 250K miles: What parts of suspension need changing, if any at all?

Topic starter

2004 Toyota Prius with 295,000 miles.  The car seems a little temperamental. On the freeway, most of the time, it drives perfectly fine.  But sometimes, it gets a little shaky when the freeway isn't perfectly smooth.  It feels like the car is swaying, but then settles down when it smooths out again, and everything is back to normal.  Steering isn't as tight as it used to be when the car is new.

Do I need a full suspension rebuild? Or would piece meanling the crucial components suffice?  What parts do you think need changing out?

Are you still running on all the original factory suspension components? If yes, it’s time to take your car to a good front end shop & have them do a thorough check of all the worn parts.

Almost 300k miles. Still on first battery?

@g-t

I just had to change it this year around 285K miles.

Did you have changed whole battery or did they rebuild it (replaced bad battery cells). It's cool to experience that even hybrid can get such mileage.

@g-t
I went with a refurbished battery. I was going to go new, but at the time, the price skyrocketed for new. Got a good refurbished one for a fraction of the price.

@g-t
Pray the battery can last five years or more

If it's not, then send it to the Junkyard and get good non-hybrid Toyota with Manual Transmission if you want to keep it Forever

@g-t
It comes with a lifetime warranty. We’ll see if that’s true, or the company is still around to honor it!

I suppose the warranty is on refurbished (changed) cells. There are still original cells that can go bad. I wish you to get as much miles as possible. I wonder how far it can go.

Fantastic;  couple of questions:  and comments.

1.  How much did this cost?   My mechanic says it's around $2,000, maybe a little less..

2.  Are you still on the same engine and transmission?

I have heard that the suspension is one of the weakest parts of the car...I have replaced my shocks at 65,000 miles... and it tends to go through tires every 30,000 miles or so..  and I'm using good tires..   currently on my 3rd set at 85,000 miles....We purchased the car brand new...I have Continental tires on now..  The standard Goodyear tires were not very long lasting. Had to switch after the 2nd set.

Ours is a 2009 model, last year with the fuel blivet... flexible bladder fuel tank....I like that a lot... tank just shrinks as you use fuel so no air pockets..

I don't know why, probably money, Toyota decided to put a metal tank back on the car....In my opinion, metal tanks are less safe... When they are close to empty you have a large air pocket inside the tank.
