2017 Hyundai Sonata RPM fluctuating

Hi Scotty,

I have a hyundai sonata 2017 automatic transmission.  I was at the stoplight the other day and then all of a sudden the RPM went from 750 - 1000 to 250 - 500 RPM.  Then it went back up to 750 - 1000.

It has around 51000 miles on it last time I checked.

What should I do with this problem car?  What are my options?  Should I trade it in, should I get a KBB cash offer?

Thank you for your help,

Thank you, DayWalker. I was trying to find a way to edit the title to my post.

What engine do you have?

I don't see Daywalker posting in this topic.

Yes, you are correct MountainManJoe. Daywalker did not post in this topic. I was only thanking him for editing the title of my topic. I noticed that because if you look carefully this forum allows for edits within a time frame. And then one cannot edit it after the time frame is over.

I didn't even see "edited by ..."
Doesn't matter. All is well.

Get it scanned for codes and report back, please.  It could be a defective IAC valve.

on a 2017? unlikely.

Why? AutoZone #AC321 - $45.99.

Because this vehicle doesn't have one. Most don't. Like I've told you before, IAC valves are obsolete.
The AC321 is for 90's era cars.

Thanks Joe, appreciate it.

Well, Hyundai had a recall about a few years back.  I went to the dealership to have them do what they do for the recall.  I asked the lady working there what the recall was about.  She didn't answer my question.

As it turned out it was a recall for the engine. There is a class action lawsuit on these vehicles. And other years as well.

Update:  Actually, the RPM when idling at a stoplight is in fact between 500 - 750 RPM.  I looked at the RPM while I was driving the other day.  I made a mistake in my first post about the incorrect RPM.

We are still waiting for the answer to our question about your engine.

I finally got around to seeing what engine the Sonata SE has. According to the picture in the manual and comparing to what the engine is on my car, if I am not mistaken it is a 2.4 GDI. Thank you for your patience, MountainManJoe, and Dan.

Clean the throttle, it's rare for a 5 year old car to need it but it's worth a shot.

Where you firmly on the brake? DCTs can dip in RPM when trying to take off.

Thank you, Dan.  Is there a way for me to clean the throttle without having to go to a mechanic? Like what do I use to clean it?

Hmm... I do not remember if I was firmly on the brake. But my foot was on the brake. I was only waiting at a stop light when it happened and then it went back up to the usual RPM while idling.

Scotty has a video on that

Personally I wouldn’t spray clean the MAF

The only recalls for the 2017 Sonata were for drivers side air bag module, trunk latch and turn signal problem.

Hi.

It happened again.  While I was waiting at a stop light it happened again.  The RPM went down to 500 or below. Then it went back up to the regular idling RPM.  Any reason why this might be happening?

AC compressor turned on, or some other load. Nothing to worry about
