Question about jacks for 1 Ton Vans

Hi Scotty,

You rarely talk about vans so I am writing you to ask which jack is the best to use for large vans? Not to work on other than to change a flat tire. I have a Dodge B350 1 Ton Van 1986 with v8 engine. I am disabled and can't easily lift objects heavier than 25 lbs.

I want to be able to carry around a jack with me that will be easy to use and easy to carry/lift. Which jack would you suggest?

I presently have a farm jack that the previous owner gave me with the van but I just don't think that is the jack I should be using.

Thank you in advance for your time,

Lisa

Go to an auto store and buy you a trolley jack. Basically small version of a floor jack but some come with a nice storage and carrying case so it’ll be easy to put in the van and use. Gonna weigh about 15-20 lbs. easiest to use. Bottle jacks, scissor jacks are not to complicated to use, weigh less, but are not as safe and the risk of jack failure is higher over a trolley jack. Coupled with a jack stand it’s about as safe, sturdy and simple as you could ask for. Here’s a link to what autozone has. Put same one in wifes car so she can change a tire with out help. If I were you I would also buy a battery powered impact so you are not dealing with a lug wrench. If you have lift limitations using a lug wrench is gonna be difficult for you.

The scissor jack Thumpy posted looks interesting. It doesn't look like you can use it manually if the motor fails, which I don't like.

Another option to consider (in addition to the jack), is getting a AAA membership. The cost of annual membership (which includes a lot of services. look it up) is often less than the cost of one tow bill.
