recently purchased a 2012 honda civic (privately) fuel mileage isnt great 10.7 liters per 100km, how can I improve my fuel mileage?

Hi Scotty, recently purchased a used 2012 privately, on my dash when driving within my town I've noticed my fuel mileage isn't great currently 10.7 liters per 100km, which to me is quite high. I have read that civics usually are like 6 liters - 7 liters per 100km. I tried to clean any carbon from fuel injectors and fuel tank by buying Royal Purple but still the same, what is a way to get my fuel mileage back to 6-7 liters per 100km?

How many miles on the car?

Start with checking the fuel trims. Do you have a scan tool to read them?

when I bought the car it had 209,000km, BUT the engine has been replaced with an engine out of a 2013 honda civic with only 69,000km. what are fuel trims, no I don't have a scan tool unfortunately

Well, you need a scan tool to read the data. By the way, how did you calculate your mpg?

I didn't calculate anything, it tells me that on the dash when I am driving

Do it manually by averaging of a couple full gas tanks.

Excellent (and typical) gas mileage for in city driving. The numbers you quoted are for highway driving at a steady 60mph.

With that said, have a complete service & tune up performed, and verify your cold tyre pressures are up to spec. See here for further tips -

no highway driving strictly around a smaller based town, only getting 10.7 liters per 100km as I type

9 kpl is typical for in city driving, in a Civic. The 15-16 kpl you quoted is for highway driving at a constant 100kph.

Yep, welcome to civic ownership - I’m guessing it’s the 1.8L, reliable but not that great on gas.

You can press the gas more lightly, on my car that takes fuel consumption way down.

other then that, assuming all data (incl. lambda) is in the green - nothing you can really do.

Don't go by what the computer tells you.  Start tracking the actual use at the gas pump for a few tanks to see what the real mileage is.  Then, based on your driving, compare that to the projected fuel consumption from the window sticker ( or look up the numbers on Edmunds or similar site).

If you are within 10% or so of the projected mileage, don't worry about it.  10-20%, look at routine maintenance items like oil, air filter, spark plugs, transmission fluid, differential fluid, stuff like that.  Consider changing to lighter wheels and tires when you are able.  More than 20%  below projected, you will probably want professional assistance with alignment and engine health (MAF sensors, and so on).

Good luck

dunno how to track fuel consumption, how do i go about doing it

I just mean to go by the miles on the odometer divided by how many gallons it takes to fill up the next tank full.

print out a receipt, and write down your odometer reading every time you fill up. (stop at the 'click')

subtract your previous odo reading from the current one to get your distance travelled.

Fuel used is the quantity on the receipt.

It's in the name. MPG ... Miles Per Gallon.  Divide the miles you travelled by gallons of fuel used to get your MPG economy.

Do this a few times to get an average.
