[Solved] Reliability of Subarus

How reliable is the Subarus? My mom and her family own 2nd gen and 3rd gen Subaru Foresters cause of affordability and space. I always thought they last around 150,000 miles with a bunch of maintenance live CV boots.

They are pretty reliable. The only thing to look out for is the CVT transmission those tend to go out around 100k miles. If the transmission lasts, you might as well be reaching 150 200k miles. The infamous head gasket issues Subaru is synonymous with isn't that big of an issue for the newer models.

I assume yours has the 4 speed automatic, which actually could last a while. Your goal of 150k miles is definitely feasible.

All in Subaru isn't a bad car brand they make decent cars but they tend to have more problems as they are behind the times in terms of powertrains.

Sometimes good things happen in new cars.

To be honest, I'm not sure what exact year is those Subarus that my mom's family owned. But, thanks for the response.

I am a little bit surprised though that they don't have the unattended acceleration problem.

They've had some problems with their CVTs (or was it the automatic?), but they're decent overall especially with the manual transmission. Best AWD system.

4 speed Jatco automatic

Mazda had jatco, subaru had jatco, when is jatco going out of business so we don't have to worry about it anymore?

Nissan also have Jatco. Not anytime soon. Unless, we switched to electric cars.

I know about nissan and unless they change their transmission provider I don't think their "rebranding" that's currently going on will work.

Rebranding can only work with people who don't much about Nissans. Or people don't think before they buy like buying new Ram 1500s.

To be fair the 4 speeds were actually pretty decent.

Actually I realized they all have 4th gen. So they have all CVTs.

One of the most reliable ones out there. Ever heard of the outback? There be a reason they sold and have a pretty decent popularity. For Subaru, as much as mechanics like to joke about head gasket issues, they are honestly good cars overall. Stuck with a concept of all wheel drive for all cars and just rolled with it. Never changed the program. As long as you can get over the fact that it's a boxer engine and that's different. Then you good. I've seen outbacks with more than 300k miles. OG engine and tranny.

One outback**** with more than 300k but plenty of people online whom also have the same and give Subaru plenty of praise.

If you stick with the manual they can be very reliable.

About that, my mom's family all drive automatics or CVTs. Anyway thanks for your response.

Well you can still get decent mileage out of them AS LONG AS you maintain them. Sure they aren't the best CVT's, but they can last if you don't abuse them. 🙂

I would give Subarus a small piece of cake for reliability.

The above answers pretty much say it. We are a Subaru family (me WRX, mom Forester, son Crosstrek + STI, daughter Crosstrek), though more by accident than any particular Subaru affection. So far I have been pleased with reliability.
Subarus are fairly simple and unrefined.  They are noisy and rough, but they have few fancy gadgets to break. And when they do break, fixes are usually cheap and easy.
