Are there any cars out there that are known for reliability but you’d never buy them because you dislike them ? Don’t be offended if your car is on this list because I still tell people to buy these if they’re looking for something reliable because not everyone gets all claustrophobic in a Civic like I do.
My list :
•Honda Civic (owned 2013, driven 2001, 2010, 2014, 2015 SI, and 2019 hatchback) : Claustrophobic interior, uncomfortable seats, can feel every bump in the road, steering and handling too sensitive, slides and feels very sketchy in the rain no matter what tires you put on it. Only bought one in the first place because I really needed a more reliable car, and my grandpa couldn’t drive anymore so he gave me a good deal on his 2013 that had very low miles.
•Toyota Corolla (drove 2007, 2018, and 2020 hatchback) : claustrophobic little old lady car, very slow feel, boring ride, can feel every bump in the road, CVTs feel weird
•Toyota Prius (drove 2014) : It’s a Prius, blind spot hell, feels weird
•Toyota Yaris (drove a newer one. Forgot year) : rides like absolute crap, super small interior
•Honda Accord (drove 2016 and 2018) : 2018+ models are UGLY, CVTs are weird
The latest generation Accords and Camrys. The Accord doesn’t look like an Accord to me. And I liked the Camry better when it was “boring”. The Camry is supposed to be a “boring” car, IMHO.
Add to the mix the latest generation Prius pre face lift. It’s just too much, too busy.
And while I love newer Acura’s and Lexus’s, their user interface for infotainment frustrates the heck out of me.
Granted, I’d still buy these before anything else. But it’s not one of those where I actually salivate to own one like in years past.
Lmao I didn’t like the older Camrys made before 2018 because they were too boring and looked like old man cars but I went from being a Honda guy to a Toyota guy when Honda ruined the Accord in 2018 while Toyota made their Camry a lot better. I have driven my grandpa’s 2007 Camry many times and that thing is slower than most Civics. As for Lexuses, those are overpriced and overrated
One thing I’ll point out about my 2019 Camry tho, is that it feels very computerized compared to my 2013 Civic. I have a feeling that the computer systems that control the transmission and engine will go out before the actual transmission or engine does. I do think Toyota should pause their advancements on technology and stick with what they’re currently doing for the next 30 years or they’ll become unreliable in the future
Haha. We liked and disliked the Camry for opposite reasons.
I feel you on cars getting too computerized. Only time will tell!
The 2009 Toyota Corolla 2.4
Ultimate combo of boring + bad quality (cheap interior, multiple first year problems, + they burn oil like mad)
Very boring to drive, interior feels like a Mitsubishi, all of them on craigslist show the cheapeness of this generation (I can't tell if Toyota made all of them with huge gaps between panels, or if all Corolla owners leave their hood and trunk open on their driveway)
Granted the next gen 2014-2016 does spark my interest for being a good car. This gen... not so much.
Also a 2007-2011 Toyota Yaris. Reliable as heck but VERY boring, wouldn't want to live with one
Granted the newer 2020-2021 Yaris is a rebadged Mazda and those are pretty fun to drive from what I've heard
If reliable for 100k miles counts, definitely the Mitsubishi Mirage (watch whole video before saying Doug is bad and paid by Chevy to screw Mitsubishi, he has some good points)

Pay 10k for a new Mitsubishi to last 100k miles, pay 20k for a new Corolla to last 200k miles. By that standards I would consider it "reliable" enough to put on this list lol.
I never much cared for the King Midget. They're cute and all and so simple they're reliable, but to actually drive on the highway? Ditto for the Crosley, even though you're guaranteed no head gasket problems with that car. No thanks.

Interesting post. Pretty much sums up this website and the Scotty Kilmer channel. Lots of useful information about diagnosing and fixing cars. But sooner or later, the topic is going to circle back to the glorious civic and corolla. They’re good cars, but they’re appliances. Like Dudley Moore said about Volvo in Crazy People:”They’re boxy, but they’re good.”
