[Solved] Reliable use tow vehicle

Hello Mr. Scotty!

I have just recently retired and am looking for a used, reliable tow vehicle (does not matter: SUV or Truck) to pull a travel trailer (between 5,000 to 7,500 pounds).  I would like a reliable vehicle, but not break the bank as I need to purchase a trailer.  Got ideas?

Thank you so much,

J

It really depends on the vehicle. And what your price range is. You might go for an extended cab, not the crew cab Toyota Tundra, but it will have to be a pretty basic one, in otherwords, work truck-like. Everyone wants a truck or SUV, so they command high prices.

Thank you Mr. Shepherd

Ok,so I would assume $10k, with $2k to cover inspection, repairs, new tires, or whatever.

You can pull that weight with some mid size rigs (I think some Grand Cherokees might be rated that high) but you wouldn’t want to.  Stick to full size platforms.  Likewise, some V6’s will do it, but V8 definitely preferred.

Start with Tundra/Sequoiah, if you can find a good one.  But, spoiler alert, you won’t.  Anything in your price range will almost certainly be very, very high miles and in need of extensive rehab in the near future.

So if you don’t find a Toyota, see if you can find a pre-2003 GM pickup or suburban.  At that age, it also will probably need major work, but the difference is that the sale price and repair costs will be much lower than a comparable Toyota.

Havent heard much good from Ford Expeditions in that price range, but maybe the Ford guys could tell you what specs are good (and what to avoid).

Thank you so much for your input! Be blessed and have a great week!

Lots of options, but depends a lot on your budget. What is your price range?

well, I was look for between $10,000 to $12,000 at the most

I tow 3000lbs every other weekend 2 hours round trip with a 2007 F-150 5.4L V8 that has a 36 gallon fuel tank. I would solely be looking at F-150s with possibly the 4.6L or late model 5.4L (2012). I cannot begin to state how important it is that for the weight you want to haul to get a body on frame pickup truck with a V8. Higher mileage F-150s properly maintained can be good too. I have 170k miles on mine and still daily drive it. Good luck

Thank you very much!
