On later model vehicles, if you’re going to scan the computer for codes, do you have to use a more advanced scanner like the $5000 one Scotty has, or can you just use a regular one like the Innova scanner Scotty has? Does a Bluedrive that links to your phone also work well?
See my write up below: it all comes down to what you need the tool to do. Generally, you pay more and you are able to do more with the scan tool, to an extent - then you get to the point of diminishing returns.

It depends on the make and the model. Some makes, you need to have a super fancy scan tool to access the advanced features.
But for most basic code pulling, a ~$100 scan tool will get you the codes. Maybe even a ~$50 scan tool too.
The $5000 scan tool gives you more features, more analysis, more charts and graphs.
The cheap basic scan tool will get you the codes. And that is about it.
Think OBD scan tool has worked great for me. $30.
