Oil burning

Hey Scotty, I’ve got a 2012 Sonata GLS with 129,000 miles that burns well over a quart of oil every 1000 miles. I always keep it topped off (never let the dipstick go below the L) but am concerned that continually adding oil is shortening the lifespan of the car. I don’t want to buy a new car in this crazy market and the Sonata has otherwise been very reliable, mainly because its a standard transmission.

I already changed the PCV valve which didn’t noticeably affect the oil consumption. I know it’s probably the GDi system the car has that is causing the issue. Should I try using a GDi cleaner in an attempt to prolong the life of the engine, or not mess with it and just keeping adding oil? I’ve always used conventional oil and change it every 5,000 miles. THANK YOU!

Those cars are notorious for engine problems such as excessive oil consumption. Total engine failure is common.

The engine is probably just worn out. You could try the ATS Carbon Clean product that Scotty recommends in case the oil rings are stuck with carbon. Other than that you can't do much other than rebuild the engine or replace the car with something better.

If ATS Carbon Clean doesn't help I would just keep adding oil until the engine quits, though your catalytic converter may be poisoned or clogged before that happens.
