In the U.S. it would be a no-brainer to call out a 13-year-old Benz as an endless money pit. However I don't know what the situation is for them in the UK. The CVT is a concern, for most manufacturers they were new tech in 2010 and early examples are typically fragile and short-lived.
thanks Chuck for your advice, is it a money pit even though it only has 14,000 miles on the clock? Ta
I would not trust a 2010-vintage CVT regardless of mileage. Site moderator @dan may have some specific data on that transmission.
thank you chuck that sounds fair, i appreciate it : )
CDI (…) CVT
These two don’t mix well.
Being honest, a CVT doesn’t mix well with anything - definitely not a torquey diesel.
Those cheap cars with fancy looking logos are almost always trash anyway.
Have you considered a manual Toyota Avensis? Maybe a Civic 1.8?
thanks dan very much for this, looking for an automatic which car would you recommend? yes thought of a civic automatic but im looking for a hatchback with a large boot : )
Hi Dan, thanks for your message. Haven't seen many of the civic tourers about here in the uk only a few knackered high mileage ones. Wondering if i should purchase a volvo xc60 instead the one i saw is from 2011 with 87,000 miles on it. 2.4 liter diesel Automatic for £8,325, is this a better option? Sure, these old Volvo diesels are solid - even the twin turbo, just make sure that it's not a PowerShift!
But, and that's a big but, as someone who owns and have driven Volvos daily for a while - you should know that they're not the cheapest car to maintain. For example, that XC60's 5 cylinder diesel has a timing belt, on some models it's every 37.5k miles! and that ain't cheap - generally nothing about it is cheap.
Also, the automatic transmission pulling that beast can eventually need replacement, it's a small transverse Japanese gearbox needing to deal with ~400NM.
Although 87k miles is not too much, if the car was maintained frequently and has ATF replacements done - but generally if you can find the same car with lower millage that would be good.
Definitely a better option than some Mercedes if a mechanic that has experience with Volvos says it's in good shape!

So yeah, it's reasonable - just not something you can really compare to a Civic.
But note that the XC60's boot of 495 litres is only only marginally bigger than the Civic hatchbacks 401 litres...
And apparently they continued to make them in the UK for the UK market until like 2017 (just make sure that it's a 1.8, or, if you want a slower car that's much less nice to drive, there's also a gasoline 1.3 from the Jazz/Fit marketed as "1.4")
thank you Dan for your comprehensive response, i will bear all this information in mind it's really helpful thank you. Not cheap to maintain but, will that have an impact if i don't use it so much, perhaps shorter drives locally and a longer 3 hour drive once a week?it has a geartronic automatic gearbox and has been maintained well by the previous owner looking at the records, i have actually put a deposit down for it, im so nervous!! 😮 thought about a civic as i originally wanted a honda, but could not find a decent one on my budget..
Great, good luck! Just make sure a mechanic takes a look at it pre-purchase!
Thank you Dan! yes it's serviced and mot is being done on Monday. I'm so nervous and excited. 😮 I'll give an update on it once i start driving it to let you know how it's going 🙂 🙂
I would have to go with no, I like to travel more than 100 miles a day. With just 22 reviews, it had a lot of complaints.
Many show the range being around 60. Even many that rated it 4 and 5 starts were talking about getting a different type like leaf or bolt the next time.
Here is one of the one star reviews
"I added up my cost of ownership (purchase and repairs) divide it by the miles driven to the point where the repairs exceed the value and got $1.01per mile driven!! big mistake. The cost of the motor replacement was $8,600 and the internal charger $9,800, plus other repairs totaled over $22,000."
My gas hog GX470 is around 50 cents a mile.
Hi nlord , thanks for your message. The link you posted refers to an electric car, the car i posted is a regular diesel , can you please advise? thank you : )
