My 2004 Corolla has never overheated. The fluid on the reservoir is at the proper level. However, when I open up the radiator cap I don't see any fluid. My question is, should I add 50/50 fluid through the radiator cap until it reaches the top or will the engine run fine as long as the reservoir is properly filled?

you shouldn't need to. You may need to change the radiator cap though.
