Looking to buy a car for every day A to B commuting.
Is a 2002 Toyota rav4 with 171k miles on it a good deal for $2,250?
It is AWD. Are those reliable? I'm looking for something that can last me at least 3-5 years.
I would have a mechanic check it out. That's not a lot of money at all, so if they say it is ok I'd go for $2000 even and buy it.
Didn't these cars have horrible transmissions?

That's why I told him to have a mechanic inspect it first. With the mileage it has on it, it is entirely possible that it has already been replaced.
Have a mechanic check it out, but the price is good, and be wary about the transmission also like @kerem said.
Don't buy it, those had horrible transmissions.
