Should i change my transmission fluid

Hi Scotty!  My name is marissa!

I have a 2013 mazda 3 grand touring I

My car has 176,500 miles. I've noticed that sometimes when I change gears from park to drive and give it some gas it kind of lurches. Then will smooth out when i get up over 45. I have changed my oil and my spark plugs w the factory recommendation. In attempts to do routine  maintenance. The engine mounts have recently been replaced as well.

It makes a groaning noise when reversing down a hill from park a clunk noise sometimes that I think might be the parking pawl. But here recently I've noticed a burning smell w a grinding sound occasionally. It's only had the transmission  changed twice. And I am the second owner.  It has a skyactive engine. And i have been told that it's supposed to have "forever" fluid.  Good for the life of the transmission.  Well. I'm in it for the long game to keep this car on the road as long as I can. It has regular oil changes. And I do my best to take care of it. But it seems to me that if it's the lifetime of the transmission. Shouldn't  it be maintained to extend it's life? Lol.  It has a transmission dipstick in a weird hard to get to place under the  engine's air filter box. I'm wondering if that's on purpose? I wanted to try and change it myself, as parts and fluid are cheaper by themselves than going to a dealership

I'm also having some power issues, it has trouble getting up to 50 sometimes can feel heat in the floorboard. And the engine kind of "shudders" when given gas sometimes. The check engine light will come as go and so will performance. Makes a kind of gurgling whistling noise  when accelerating. And I have to push down kinda hard to stop. I thought maybe theres a vaccume leak and or I might have a brake booster issue. Or maybe even a partially clogged cat? But thought hey never hurts to ask!  I appreciate  any advice you have to give!

There's no such thing. See the FAQ for detailed information on changing transmission fluid.

Start by scanning for codes and live data.

Don't fall for that trick. Automatic transmissions get every bit as dirty nowadays they did back in the day. They skipped out on transmission dipsticks because they're too cheap, and they just accelerate planned obsolescence, or they put them in really inconvenient places so you need a shop to do it. My 2017 Mustang has its dipstick literally on the transmission.

Bingo. You are absolutely correct.

Unfortunately, it should be done from the very beginning. 176k is approaching to the end of its lifetime.
