Should I change the automatic transmission fluid in my son's "new" 2008 Toyota Corolla with 91,000 miles?
I don't know if it has ever been changed. Car shifts and drives fine. No issues. I want to do the right thing to make it last. I also don't want to do anything that might make the otherwise OK automatic transmission start slipping! What would you do? If I don't change it, will it fail at 150000-175000 miles? Thanks.
Next time put the full question in the body of the post (like I did for you) and not in the title. Thank you.
Yes.
It's a little late but as long as the fluid is not burnt or gritty it should be OK. Do a drain and fill, not a flush, and keep the old fluid on hand just in case. In any event no one can predict how long the transmission will last on a nearly 15-year-old used car but it is certain to fail sooner without proper maintenance.
I would change it, drain and fill along with filter change. And then from now on, have it changed every 40,000 miles.

OK. I called several Toyota dealers. One recommended a $300 fluid flush and change. Another recommended a $190 change without a flush. They said a flush might loosen debris that could clog small passageways and cause the transmission to fail. They also said that they never had a transmission fail as a consequence of dropping the pan and changing the fluid without flushing. This seems like the best approach. Would you agree? Thanks.
I have the same situation and just did a drain and fill a few week ago and it all worked out. Didn't notice much of a change in shifting or performance, there wasn't a problem to begin with, but now I have peace of mind. Save old fluid in case something goes wrong, but you should be fine.
