Should I change the rear gears on my 1999 Mustang VS

HI, I picked up a 1999 Mustang, automatic, V6 convertible last year. The car is excellent cosmetically, has fewer than 62k miles and runs very well. It was bought mostly for taking top down, Sunday drives on back roads. While I wasn't looking for GT performance I find the V6 more sluggish than I like; I tend to drive with the overdrive turned off most of the time when I'm on back roads. I'm not interested in getting involved in loads of bolt on mods which probably won't make much of a difference. My mechanic suggested I could put new gears in the rear end. Specifically 3.73. He says that will make the car feel quicker but I will lose the high end. Since the car will rarely see the highway is that a reasonable option? Thanks

Sure - relatively cheap and easy (and it's not like you couldn't go back if you didn't like it) you'd probably even get the same or better gas mileage if you didn't feel you needed to turn off the overdrive.

3.73 is the perfect gearing for those cars. 4.10 is a little too much, and 3.55 won't quite get you where you want to be.

Just MAKE SURE that the person who does the job has done Mustangs before and knows what they are doing. You get the install wrong and man they will whine like a banshee.
