I’ve read you can buy a plug in that disables the active fuel management which I’ve read causes issues as these older 5.3L GM engines age.
My question: is it worth the 200 bucks to do this?
seems like the oil consumption issues are on the 2009 and earlier models.
I change my oil every 4 months religiously, so wondering if this will make truck last longer without an engine rebuild?
Yes you can and this modification has become more and more common as the GMC trucks with AFM age and the AFM fails and causes a multitude of issues including problems with oil flow to the lifters. There are several YouTube videos on how to delete it but if you arent experienced in working on cars I would ask a shop to do it for you. They even make kits now to replace the AFM oil gallery to deactivate the AFM without throwing a CEL.
To more directly answer your question the answer is PROBABLY yes. The AFM is a known source of lifter failure and eliminating it will likely prolong the life of the lifters. That being said there are several known reasons for lifter failure in those trucks so eliminating the AFM wont guarantee longevity of the lifters but it will eliminate a known problem area.
it probably will make the engine last longer because over time the stupid act of fuel management turns out that damaged often occurs to pistons and other engine parts when they are deactivated it does something to the lubrication system
@scottykilmer
Thanks! Could you do a video on these trucks/ the Chevy Suburban 5.3L sometime? They are all over the place.
