Should I buy a new car instead of routine maintenance on my present one?

Hi Scotty,

I have a 2015 Honda CR-V and it's run just fine for the 7 years I've had it. Now that it's 7 years old, it needs the following maintenance:

New brake pads

Flush brake fluid

New tires

Change transmission fluid

Flush coolant

That's a lot of maintenance. Given the price of used cars, should I sell my 2015 Honda CR-V, and get another car, like a Toyota Rav4?

How many miles/kilometers does your car have?

All those things are regular maintenance items and not hard to do. However; if that is your criteria for getting a new vehicle then you are a dealer's dream.

That's not much maintenance at all after 7 years.

It is true that due to prevailing conditions right now you will get more money now than ever for your CR-V. However you will likewise have to pay a record high price for its replacement.

If it were me and the CR-V did not have any serious problems I'd do the maintenance and keep it, but it really depends on what you want. (I tend to keep my vehicles as long as possible and wring the last possible drop of value out of them before letting them go. They are usually "traded in" to the boneyard.)

I drive a 2015 CRV regularly. It’s not mine. But I know it well enough. Great car. All those things are maintenance items, part of any car as it ages.

Do the math.

If you want a new car and a new car payment, sell it or trade it in.

If all you want is a working reliable car, do the maintenance.

Folks are different with their preferences. Some folks like it nice and new. Others have driven the same car for 20 years. I’m the latter. Many of my friends and family are the former.

If you don't want to work on the car yourself, find an independent mechanic to take care of the maintenance.

You think that’s a lot of maintenance?!

I sure hope your next vehicle isn’t a garage queen..

Those are very very basic maintenence items. Wouldn't take a day for a mechanic to perform all. You're making me think whether you have ever changed the oil at all. If you want to buy a brand new RAV4 at MSRP, good luck. It's already hard finding a decent used one that's not being sold at a new one price.

Yeah I've changed the oil and filter regularly. And that's it.

That's normal maintenance.

A new car is going to need that stuff within 5 years

No brainer, do the maintenance especially since it is a Honda CRV.  Even if it has 200K on it, you can expect to get another 200K easy by keeping up on oil changes and basic maintenance items like you listed.
