Should I purchase from a questionable dealership?

Scotty,

I've been looking around for quite a while have have come across a 2012 Nissan Xterra Pro-4x with about 60k miles and an auto. Carfax looks ok, good service history across 3 owners, first owner put about 30k miles over 2-3 years. Then the vehicle was sold as a Nissan CPO to the next owner in 2014. 2nd owner put only about 20k miles over 6 years, one time only putting 1k miles over 8 months according to service history. Vehicle was, I assume, traded in early this year and eventually sold to auction this March and somewhere inbetween there and the 3rd owner (the dealership in question) gained about 10k miles. The Xterra is shown with some off road upgrades, new front bumper with winch, off road tires, and some other things which making it look VERY NICE. VERY TEMPTING. But I lookup the dealership and see some questionable reviews, check engine lights coming up after a day or two, some leading to possible $5000 repairs (diesel truck), one other buyer's vehicle rattled on the way home at 65mph and needed a whole new suspension, and some other bad reviews.

Also it seems that this dealership usually upgrades the vehicles themselves and sells them as is. Considering the Carfax, do you think this Xterra would be something to look into? What do you think about making a possible purchase from this dealership, with it's bad reviews?

I would say if they are doing questionable practices on other vehicles there is no reason to think they wouldn’t do it to you. Also when you trade a car in the dealer only sends them to auction if they have high miles or serious issues. Since it is a 2012 with 60k miles the fact it went to Auction would really concern me, especially with 10k in mystery miles. Something there just screams at me RUN.  Also know the transmissions on these have a history of short life. Average lifespan is 110k-180k, with a good majority closer to the 110k mark.

With 60k miles on the clock there's not much longevity left in it.....Don't fall for the "off-road" gear...That's just window dressing to entice someone to bite. Walk away, don't get stuck with an iffy vehicle from a less than scrupulous dealer.

Walk away.

NEVER purchase from any dealer that you have doubts about. Trust your gut and research.

Just the fact that its a 3 owner car makes me wary, look private party or use cargurus and autotempest to search across lots of dealers.

As for the transmission, 2012 wasn't really known for transmission issues, the mid 2000s Xterras have a right rate of transmission failure, so stay away from those. See here

Also, you have to have a mechanic check out whatever car you are going to buy before you buy it.

I appreciate the input from everybody. I haven't really seen much of the transmission problems during my research. As far as I know and have heard that these vehicles could go hundreds of thousands miles with just regular maintenance. I think Scotty mentioned it in a video once. So that's pretty much what I've been looking for, a low mileage xterra with good maintenance records. As far as vehicles going straight to auction, when I worked at the dealership, they would usually only send the high mileage, beat up, or not so popular models to auction right away. Looking at the carfax this one didn't seem to sit on the lot for very long after the first owner traded it in. I cant really tell after the second owner, I would have to double check.  Being that the second owner put very few miles, he could have outfitted it and used it seldomly then traded it. We would send the very customized vehicles to auction right away too.  Or maybe they just didn't use it that much, who knows I Dont Know
