Hey Scotty, I have a 1986 manual toyota pickup 22re with 350,000 miles and had a mechanic recently check on it since the head gasket blew out. He also said that he noticed water in the engine and says that he doesn't think it is worth it to fix, and suggests to get a new engine for it. It definitely does not run at the moment. What do you think?

As the biased owner of a 1981 4x4 Toyota pickup, I would absolutely go for the new engine and get another 300K miles out of it. The 22R and 22RE engines were among the best and most reliable ever made by Toyota and these trucks, especially the solid front axle ones, are becoming a high demand item.  Either that or go spend an average $45K for a new car.  Your choice.  Check out engines at LC Engineering, for example.  There are lots of Toyota aftermarket specialty places available to you.

It depends. How is the rest of the truck? Realize that with that age/mileage, almost everything needs to be taken care of (from rubber and plastic parts to mechanical parts).

depends on the condition of the truck and the cost of the engine
