Should I replace the whole CV shaft or just boot?

Hey Scotty,

On my Toyota the inner CV Axel Boot is torn out. But I feel no noise or any other problem. Should I replace the whole thing or try to find just a Boot if it’s available. Picture is attached. It is on the Passenger side.

Thanks

Definitely would replace the whole cv joint imo.  Depending on the retailer you can get the part pretty decent priced around 100 bucks total.  The reason to replace is the boot replacement may work on its own but dirt and particulates may have already gotten in there and youd eventually have to have it replaced.  I replaced one on the same vehicle it looks as yours on a 2000 toyota solara recently and all you need to do is remove the axle nut and cotter pin, detach the abs line off the strut tower to get it out of the way, I found it easier to remove the two bolts that hold the wheel hub to the strut the easiest way to get slack to get the old cv out. (You can also remove the tie rod end and the ball joint method but I found the strut bolts to be easier)   Make sure you have a spare jack to hold the control arm as it will make things much easier. Remove the snap ring next to the axle where it sits before the transmission, then remove the outer cv and you may need a puller but I managed to pull it right out.  Replace in reverse order.  The snap ring can be a pain without long needle nose pliers, dont forget to do this as its easy to forget but it needs to set in the groove to keep the axle from disengaging from the axle mount. You may need to work it in a bit to get it to fit in.  Also make sure to torque your axle nut to proper specs.  Most auto parts will let you rent a torque wrench.  I have always used a 250 ft Ib torque when I do cv axles. Hope this helps.
