My 2004 Expedition (5.4L, 185k, 4x2) has cost me about $2k in repairs in the last 6 months. (new intake manifold, manifold gasket, plugs, coils, some hoses, brakes). It has been riding a bit rough in 2021 and my wife - who is the main driver and hauls my 3 kids around daily - said her trust in it has waned. So I bit the bullet and bought a 2015 Toyota Sienna (SE, 100k miles). She loves it and I'm happy to finally have a reliable family hauler.
I still have the Expy. I work from home, so a 2nd car isn't a necessity, but it's nice to have. It's falling apart; in addition to the aforementioned mechanical work, the drivers seat is a disaster, the headliner is falling, the drivers side window doesn't work, it has some minor rust and paint issues on the roof, etc.
My conundrum is this: should I try to sell the Expy and get ~$4k for it, which I would then turn around and use towards a 2007-2009 Lexus ES 350? I've seen a few private seller sales near me for ones with 150k-200k miles for $6k-$8k.
Is it even worth all the trouble? I don't need two 8 seaters in my driveway, but at the same time I have had the Expy for 4 years, I know it inside and out, I know it's quirks and how to work on it, etc. My concern is it's only going to continue to deteriorate and be a money pit.
Thanks in advance for the insight!
Don’t buy a used car right now, unless you urgently need transportation.
Sell the Expedition and hold onto the cash.
I would sell the Ford. I wouldn't look at early Lexus es350s due to cracking dashboard issues. I would look at something else.
