2017 Sienna (still with indirect fuel injection, 6 gears, 266 hp) or 2018 Odyssey (with 9 gears, 280hp). Which one is better buy?

Go with the Sienna, the Odesseys have weak transmissions.

Are there any reports for this new 9 gear automatic transmission Odyssey? I heard about some perhaps electrical problems; however, I am not sure it would be called a total disaster like Chrysler or Dodge.

The Odyssey would definitely be better than anything from Chrysler or Dodge. Honda doesn't make the Odyssey transmission anymore it is now supplied by ZF. The Sienna is still the benchmark however.

not the newer odyssye they use ZF trans and prob on same level or better than aisin

See below:  get the Toyota Sienna.  Btw, MY2016 and older had 6 gears (that’s the one I recommend);  MY2017-2020 had 8 gears (still better than the Odyssey).

Definitely go with the Sienna.

Sienna for sure. Those can go 400k with just regular maintenance.

Can't comment on the Siena as it isn't sold in Ireland, however an aunt drove the similar Toyota Previa and a japanese imported Honda Odyssey both 4 speed manual and both a 2.4L engine.

Both cars lasted over 200k miles, (255 and 227 respectively if memory serves correctly), Toyota was a tad less luxurious but maintenance was cheaper overall. Toyota ended up stolen one night about ten years ago, otherwise I imagine she would still be driving it.

In short, go with Toyota.

You're very welcome.

If the Sienna actually has the 6 speed automatic, have a mechanical inspection done and if it passes buy it!

If the Sienna has the 8 speed automatic, have a mechanic check it out, and it would still be better than the Odyssey, just not as good as the 6 speed.

Here in the states 2017 had the 8 speed automatic.

I purchased a 2018 Odyssey new. I too was torn between an Odyssey and Sienna. The Toyota was a more stripped down vehicle when compared to the Honda but was considerably higher priced. 50k on it now and the only issue was a defective fuel injector. Dealership replaced all of them under warranty. Just received a letter today from Honda stating they are extending the warranty for fuel injectors for 10 years/150k miles. As for the transmission no issues unless you’re in eco mode. Seems to shift a little ruff on certain gears but does not do this in any other mode, probably the eco shift points?

Sienna better because of proven 6 speed auto aisin trans, do not get newer one with  8 speed, it hasnt been out long enough

the honda odyssey recently started getting supplied by ZF as well as pilot and ridgeline. They're very good cars but toyota sienna almost never had problem previously. early 2000s odyssey had alot of trans problems
