They have to remove the crossmember, drop the rear of the exhaust system down, remove the heat shield, remove the drive shaft hanger bolts (to allow the drive shaft to drop down a little), remove both rear gas tank strap bolts (to allow the rear of the gas tank to drop down an inch or so to remove the brake cable clip and replace with a new one.

Should be 2 hours labor plus $25 for the part.

Those prices are outrageous, even for BMW repairs. I'd get a second opinion and price quote. (If it were my car I would just zip-tie the brake cables out of the way, ignore the valve cover leak unless it is severe, and look at less expensive tires.)

+1 for @chucktobias idea to zip tie the brake cables.  Did that on my wife’s Grand Cherokee 2 years ago and it’s holding fine.

Use the search bar above to look up valve cover gaskets.  Common topic and it will benefit you to understand the problem and what your options are.

Regarding the tires, you should be able to get good quality tires on all 4 wheels for what the dealer is quoting you for 2.  Take it elsewhere.

@dad2lm2 solution for the brake lines seems highly plausible if the cables aren’t too far gone.

I’ve had my valve cover gasket replaced on my previous BMW. It costs an arm and a leg, but it shouldn’t be that much. That pricing is outrageous. It’s an inline 6 right?

Wow. Thank you for reinforcing my resolve to never own a BMW. Everything costs 100x as much.

Gotta love "German Engineering".
