Starter running, no key in ignition

Topic starter

I have a 2006 Saturn Ion with 207,000 miles, automatic with a 2.2 engine. Check engine light was on with a knock sensor code. I read that you needed to remove the starter in order to get to the bolt for the knock sensor. I disconnected the negative battery terminal, then disconnected the starter but never removed it. I realized I could work around the starter to replace the knock sensor, so I did so. I reconnected all the wires to the starter, correctly, as far as I know because they only really fit one way. As I was reconnecting the negative battery terminal, the starter begins whirring trying to start the engine. The key was in my pocket. I triple checked everything and it continues to engage anytime the battery is reconnected. Outside the fact that I wired it backwards, I am at a loss. I don't want to burn out the starter, it is only roughly a year old. Any help would be great. Thanks

Check your starter/ignition relay in the under hood fuse box. Your owners manual should identify which relay it is. There should also be a diagram inside the fuse box cover. Try testing by swapping it with another same size relay and see if the starter motor stops running continuously. Good luck.

Thank you. I will try that out today and let you know.

You're most welcome.

Turns out I'm just an idiot and wired it backwards. Thank you for help though.

An easy fix is a good fix. {pear}
