Starting Problems 2008 Elantra

2008 Elantra automatic transmission 160,000 miles one owner has developed an intermittent starting problem. The battery is holding 12.3 volts but the engine won't turn over...then starts instantly when we jump the battery with a battery pack. One mechanic found nothing wrong but said that the battery was too small?? Hyundai dealership did a diagnostic ($200), replaced one fuse ($80) and recommended the replacement of the purge valve and gas cap for $500 but I don't see how a purge valve could be responsible for a starting problem. I am guessing that this is an intermittent short or weak cable going to the starter but the starter was tested and was working properly. We don't want to buy another car right now in this market and we know this is a lot of miles for an Elantra. Help!

Now that you have been ripped of by the dealer, you should do some research to find out what is the correct CCA battery is for your vehicle.  Any auto parts store can tell you that and test your battery and alternator for free.

Went to AutoZone, where we purchased a battery two years ago. That battery was replaced a year ago, free of charge. The counterman gave us a third battery without even testing the one in the car and told us that it was the exact battery for this model., also free of charge. The problem continues. Car runs for several days then refuses to run. Additional information: When the car refuses to start there is a rather loud clicking noise that comes from the back of the engine, where the purge valve is, but it also can be heard very clearly from the trunk. This is a rapid clicking sound that goes on for around thirty seconds. While the clicking the engine will not turn over, even with the battery pack attached to the battery. When the clicking stops, the car will start.

Could be a faulty ignition switch or relay.
