Timing belt needed??

Good morning,

I am at a Honda dealer now with my wife’s 2012 Honda odyssey. It has extremely low mileage 34000 miles. They said they recommend changing the timing belt due to age (obviously not the mileage). Said it would be $1500. I passed on the recommendation for now but curious what you think.

Thanks,

It should be changed due to age, they're not lying about that, but stay away from stealerships and chain shops and find an independent mechanic that can do the work at a reasonable price.

If you can, I recommend inspect the timing belt yourself. If it is a 4 cylinder, there should be a top cover to side of the engine that can be taken off to inspect.

Due to age, it is probably time to do the timing belt.

FWIW, I got quoted about the same price for doing my timing belt on my 4 cylinder 1999 Honda Accoed at the STEALERSHIP. Independent shops quoted me about 50-65% of the STEALERSHIP price.  I ended up doing it myself for about 15% the STEALERSHIP price for parts plus a little elbow grease.

While I appreciated the experience in doing it myself, I think most independent mechanics charge a fair price foe the timing belt, as it is a PITA to do if you have no idea what you are doing.

You are getting screwed.

Thanks for response. I did not get the work done. When should I get it replaced due to age? Or mileage?

Thanks

Never go to a dealer.  Find an independent mechanic who can inspect the belt for wear or defects.  Should be changed at 50-80K miles.  $35 at AutoZone.
