Starting your vehicle in Winter -20 to -30 celcius + Thumping/Thomping sound on rear side of vehicle

Is anyone able to answer this question?  Lately, we've been having these really cold temperatures in Canadian weather and to the point, the car is hard to start in the mornings.  Does this affect the engine?  Also, lately, there is this odd sound on my vehicle when going on rough roads a Thumping sound and I just replaced my Shocks (the sound is coming from the rear right side).  I even tried adjusting the tire pressure but still a sound. Going on smooth nice pavements no sound just when you are going over the Sewers or Rough Roads the sound gets louder and louder. Does anyone have any idea? Thanks!

Is this a gasoline or diesel engine? What car are you currently driving?

Vehicle starting in cold weather: check the battery and make sure you have enough power to start it.

Thumping sound in rear: Check the rear tires- they are probably worn and uneven.

Thumping sound could also be your rear sway bar bushings. If you go underneath and bang upward on the center of the swaybar and it moves, it will also knock. BUT having your shocks recently replaced sounds suspect!!!

That thump sounds like someone didn't tighten down the shock properly & it's loose, I've seen that plenty of times.

Bring it back to the shop asap & tell them to torque all the parts they installed or may have removed/loosened in the process. Explain the thump only started after they did the job. If you can get a different guy at the shop to do the work this time insist on that. The guy was sloppy.

Thank you for all of your responses.  My mechanic appears to be a one-man job or run by family members so it's hard to even select one person versus the other.  I had my mechanic check the sway bar bushings before I replaced the shocks the noise sounds like something loose and it's only coming from one of the back tires (sometimes the noise is a bit annoying) but it doesn't bother me much I guess you can't expect bells and whistles coming from a 14-year-old vehicle.
