Toyota Camry 2002 steering wheel shakes a little between 62-72 mph. Had steering gear and rack and pinion replaced 6 months ago. Yesterday tires were rotated and balanced but still have the problem.

What could be the problem?

Please help!

When was the last time you had the car aligned by professionals?

I have no idea. Wouldn’t the mechanic do that when he replaced things or suggest that needed done today?
He said something about a toe? Toe in? I don’t remember what he said he did when he replaced the parts 6 months ago.

toe-in is part of alignment

He should’ve told you that you’ll need an alignment after replacing the rack.. Toe-in (or out) is part of the front end alignment.

Try calling him up and asking if he himself had the car aligned using a fancy machine. If not, I really recommend you visit a reputed front end alignment shop in your area, and have them diagnose what’s going on. Maybe all you need is a proper front end alignment..

In future, a new front end alignment is required whenever you replace any steering or suspension parts such as struts, arms, etc.

All the best & keep us posted with the shop’s diagnosis.

I will call him Monday and see if he did an alignment.
Thank you for the information, I appreciate it.

Thank you for the information. Hopefully I won’t have to do this again.

No worries.

If it shakes at 62 mph, drive at 61 mph. Problem solved.

Thank you for the video. The steering wheel only shakes between the speeds I mentioned. It doesn’t shake when I brake or at lower speed. Rims are excellent no dings. The mechanic had the car for 3 days and took it to the tire shop to have the tires rotated and balanced.

Double check the outer tie rod bolts.

Had one loosen up after repairs and caused identical symptoms.

I wouldn’t have a clue but can ask my mechanic on Monday. Thank you for the information, I appreciate it.

You're welcome.
It's surprising how little play in a part can cause such vibration.

I called the mechanic and it has been aligned to. I’m just going to drive it until I can find an affordable used Camry.

Thank you for for your thoughts on this issue.

Take it to a good alignment shop. Not everyone knows how to do it right.
