Sticky door panels and dash

Hey everyone! I saw Scotty's new video

and in it he mentions that a Lexus dealership fixed the panels for free; however, when I went to my dealership 2 years ago for the same reason on my 2007 Lexus LS 460 they said it would cost me $5,000. So my question is has there been a recent recall that I didn't know about or should I call the 1 (800) 255-3987 corporate customer service number and file a complaint or perhaps if anyone else as a better solution I am open ears.

I have a 2008 Camry that had the same issue, after moving to Central Texas from Massachusetts. There was a TSB (and a customer campaign and extended warranty) after a lawsuit had been filed. The problem was self-inflicted, by Toyota. They knowingly went with a polymer that was inadequate for warmer and more humid climates.

Even after the settlement, Toyota apparently "slow walked" producing enough replacement dashes, trying to outlast the extended warranty due dates. https://jennstrathman.com/melting-dashboard/

This is also discussed on the Club Lexus site:

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/es-5th-gen-2007-2012/945181-anyone-have-tsb-for-dash.html

I was lucky. The local dealer had a replacement dash that matched the color of my interior. It was replaced, N/C.

I think that you're more-or-less out-of-luck, given the expiration dates discussed on the Club Lexus site.

Some folks put dash mats on the dash. As for the interior doors, perhaps a salvage yard has more serviceable cosmetic plastics.

BTW, in my own case, this hardly ended problems with the interior. The lower dash, passenger's side, also cracked, and the glove box support failed, as a result. I bought a replacement from a salvage yard, installed it, and have had no problems.

Ditto with the Center Console armrest -- cracked and broken. Again, this was replaced with a good one, for a few dollars, from a salvage yard.

Additionally, even the plastic air filter box cracked, after eight years. I replaced it with a K&N short air intake, more than five years ago.

The plastics on this generation of Toyota's and Lexus' were just terrible.

It should be covered until the end of this month.

The is turning into quite a fiasco. Toyota is blowing people off and covering their ass so much that people are getting mad and filing lawsuits. This is why I laugh when people try to convince me that Scotty's favourite auto maker "cares about their customers"

Amazon is cashing in on the misfortune by selling people mats to cover the mess LoL

Oh yeah the dealership pretty much told me either pay $1700 to get the doors and dash redone or I’m sol. I’ve called upholstery shops around me who have had plenty of customers with Lexus vehicles having the same issue. It’s almost becoming a joke at this point.

I called the dealership today...I got nowhere. I was told the primary warranty for this sticky issue for my 2008 IS 250 expired in 2018. Customer support suggested to call Lexus direct, so I did. Lexus took all my information, gave me a case number and I emailed some pictures. She did say some people were mailed letters with a different primary coverage period. (I was referencing the letter posted above with the date of March 31, 2021. She knew about it.) A case manager is supposed to call me back tomorrow. I'll keep you posted! Might have to drop Scotty's name tomorrow like he just mentioned in his video for his new "shorts" channel. Again, thanks to Scotty with continued success in 2021. Tomette

Recently I watched your video on an 08 is-250 and the sticky dash issue. I also heard they got theirs fixed for free even at almost 145k miles. I recently bought one as well and now that things are warming up I’m having the same issue but also seeing damage on my doors with the same material as well. I got with Lexus customer service over a month ago and the case manager and them were as useless as can be and denied it after weeks of back and forth. Who else could i get in touch with about this? The car is an 08 with 102k miles.

Hello! I just viewed your video from 5 days ago referring to the Lexus IS250 sticky dash/door fix for free.  I recently purchased a 2008 IS250 with 111,000 miles. If I touch the door wrong I can leave my fingernail mark in it!  I believe I see damage from the previous owners dog in the door which just ruins the beauty. You mentioned in the video that time is running out to have this sticky fixed by Lexus for free. I am going to call my dealership on Monday. Can you give me any advice or tips to persuade them to take care of this for me? I'm feeling some push back is coming. The car is still beautiful except for these blemishes. Love watching your videos, Scotty. Thanks for all you do.  ~Tomette

Toyota has committed to fixing it. End of story. Kick over some tables if you need to LoL

Update on mine the Lexus dealer called me back and said since my car was assembled in December of 2008 and not before July of 2008 i would not be eligible for the replacement. I’m very disappointed in the outcome you can tell the quality of the materials they used is terrible.

Hello, I just finished watching the video about the 2008 Lexus IS250 that was put out on March 14, 2021. SOmething stuck out to me in that video about the sticky dash board. In the video Scotty said that the kid that bought the car was taking it to a Lexus dealership to get it replaced for free. I just called my local Lexus Dealership (Lexus of Orange County NY), and they said that the recall expired in 2017. I wasn't aware that recalls could expire like that, but then this person in the video could do it a little over a month ago. I would like to get my sticky dash replaced for free as well but I am not sure why this happened.

Hi Scotty, hope this finds you well. I love your channel which serves humanity and safes lots of lives...and saves many people from making bad choices. Saw your March 14, 2021 YouTube video about Lexus (which you mentioned lexus fixed dashboard of a new 2008 lexus owner without charge). I bought a Lexus rx 350 last year in October. I'm a first time owner of a car and of a Lexus brand. I noticed the dashboard is cracking and sticky when outdoors in a sunny day. I contacted Lexus main website customer service online about the dashboard issue. They said they can't do anything about it since it has been more than 10 years from when the car was first used. They said I am responsible and can go to one of thier sales dealerships for services to check and fix it on my own expense. I didn't know about the recall until after I bought it from a private owner. Could you help me convince Lexus that his is a factory error and I didn't know about it. I also asked them if it is safe to drive and if the cracking and melting won't affect the safety airbags on the driver and passenger sides, but they said they can't tell me if safe or not, only their sales dealerships can check and tell me what to do. They are throwing the factory error on me. I can forward you my email exchange with them. Let me know if kindly possible to help and if you would like to see the email exchange.

Look forward to hearing from you. And thanks again for your amazing channel.

Kind regards,

Waleed Alhariri

@waleed1211

unfortunately there's a time limit on the coverage for factory defects. They do not give free repairs forever. The number of owners does not matter. You should research these things before you buy a used vehicle.

In my opinion there should not be a time limit on manufacturer's defects. I just inherited a garage kept LS460 with 58,000 miles and I was told it will cost $7,600 to replace the sticky panels. I really wanted to keep the car, it's a beauty and drives like a dream. Shame on you Lexus/Toyota!
