Still Use Steel Seal As A Preventative?

Hey Scotty,

I have a 1996 Toyota RAV4 (automatic, 2-door, 141K miles). It runs great and I hope to keep it for life. I'm about to install a new radiator, thermostat, and hoses (and will use Toyota pink coolant). Do you still recommend pouring a bottle of Steel Seal into the radiator with the new coolant every time the coolant is changed to prevent a blown head gasket (as you did in the video below)?

Watch "How to Stop a Head Gasket Leak in Your Car" on YouTube

Thanks

no. if you needed it then it would be in the coolant already.

Thanks, I won't put in the Steel Seal. Hopefully Scotty will take this video off YouTube if it's obsolete.

Don't hold your breath. Instead, try watching a newer video. This one is 12 years old.

Hey @mountainmanjoe, I was wondering the same thing. In that video, Scotty is actually saying to use it for preventive maintenance with each coolant change, not to correct a bad gasket. It's the only place I've found him suggesting this, so I was also wondering if he still recommends it too.

at what time in the video?

It's pretty much the whole point of the video, but you can zero in at 0:50....

I wouldn't use it like that. But I'm also not afraid of blown head gaskets.

You also have to keep in mind that this video is 12 years old, and people's opinions can change. (Scotty has reminded viewers of this a few times). If you want Scotty's up to date advice, then watch his most current videos on the subject.

Hence why the video should be taken off YouTube and spare people the confusion.
