strange coolant leak after head gasket replacement

Hey Scotty!! My Son and I have been watching your channel for years now, but this is the first time we have asked a question!

My Son and I replaced the head gasket on a 1999 S10, 2.2 ltr w/5 speed,(105k miles) but as we started to fill the cooling system I noticed a leak that appeared to be coming from the backside of the head. we double and tripple checked all hoses and clamps, nothing from them. So I decided to start it up and see if we had compression (it did), let it run until the thermostat opened and continued to fill with coolant. By the time this happened, the leak stopped and maintained pressure!! What the heck happened and should we expect the coolant leak to return?

thank you- RT and NJ Bazzell

You could put UV dye in the coolant to see if it is still leaking at all. Otherwise, it would be hard to know (without taking the head off!). I would definitely re-torque the head, using a good torque wrench and the prescribed criss-cross sequence.

As Glen said, head bolts should be re-torqued after a brief run-in to get the engine hot.

I couldn't say where your leak came from, if everything was assembled properly. But if it stopped, then maybe it just got pooled up somewhere in a valley or something. Just keep an eye on it and wait and see I guess.
