Hi Scotty,
You recommend the Subaru Outback. Does that apply to all years or only recent 2022 and 2023. The price is cars has skyrocketed and my budget only allows a certain price range under $11000. I am a senior on SS. Miss you being in Houston. I used to bring my car to you back in the 80’s!

Although the head gasket problem was solved at least 10 years ago (the 2.5 engine with chain-driven cams is OK), the weak point you need to beware of is the CVT. That is the weakest point on Subarus, with limited lifespans compared to conventional automatic transmissions. They were improved over the years so later models are preferable but those may be priced beyond your budget.
Be sure to have any prospects subject to a thorough pre-purchase inspection by a good mechanic, preferably one who can use a fancy scan tool to look for transmission faults. You would not want to blow your budget a car that will wind up needing a $7000-$8000 transmission replacement in the near future.
I would start my search post 2012. And take it from there. Pre 2012 had the head gasket problems.
